A Pleasant Surprise

:
Glad to hear this fine game has spawned a book series.

I purchased this expecting a branching story with a few alternate paths, but I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the game. The modern noir-style story and characters hooked and pulled me right in and the acting performaces were solid throughout. Most of all, it's a very well written story and script with plenty of memorable--even genuinely frightening--moments. I even got choked up at the end, but I won't say why because I don't want to blow the ending. It's one of the few games I've played that genuinely moved me on an emotional level. The puzzles seemed to be well integrated into the audio sequences. A few puzzles took some trial and error and persistance, but I was able to get through them all without any enduring frustration. All in all, it took me almost four hours to finish with a couple of breaks in between. I really like what Realtime has done with this game and I hope Episode 2 is not far off. If your a fan of classic adventure-style games and love a good ghost story, give this one a try.

UPDATE 12/15/08
I continue to follow this app. and am rooting for its success because I thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m hungry to play more games just like this. I have a disturbing pattern. The majority of the reviewers who give Soul Trapper one or two stars can't seem to express themselves clearly or intelligently. Trust me, this isn’t an application for morons. Most of these haters clearly haven't played past the first chapter or two. Or they haven't read or understood the product description and go into it expecting a triple-A console videogame to miraculously appear on their iPhones. If you’ve played Soul Trapper to its finale, you will not be disappointed. You’ll also appreciate that the first few chapters were designed to ease listeners into the experience and get them familiar with the interface and concept. The story really doesn’t kick into high gear until chapter five, so don’t be like these haters with A.D.D. who play for 15 minutes and then give up because they’re playing something that actually requires smarts, imagination, and focus to appreciate. Whether you like ghost stories or not, or adventure style games or not, you have to, at the very least, respect that Soul Trapper attempts to break out of the box of the standard 99 cent app. trap. To give something groundbreaking one or two stars is wrong. The app. is not perfect and can certainly be improved upon (better saving and restoring, etc.), but it’s ambitious as hell and a terrific start. This is coming from a guy who enjoys good books, movies, and t.v. shows. BUT READ CLOSELY: Soul Trapper is not a game, it’s not a novel or an audio book or a graphic novel or a movie or a tv show or a throwback radio drama. It’s something different that lies in between all of these familiar forms of storytelling; that makes it a legitimate new form of entertainment. Anything new takes time to absorb and appreciate. But something that clearly cost this much to produce may not have time on its side if idiots who play it for 10 minutes and don’t appreciate even an ounce of its complexity or subtlety just toss it aside and rip it in a publc forum. Sadly, many small-minded people hate anything new, so they try to kill it in its tracks. I can only hope that Soul Trapper, and audio adventures in general, can endure and can steadily find their way to story-loving listeners.

Unique and addictive!

:
I had my doubts, but as I played along and allowed myself to become immersed within the story I couldn't stop playing!

The acting isn't the greatest nor does this affect the gameplay whatsoever. You assume the role as the hero and you are taken on an adventure throughout his world as a ghost hunter. Things get more complex as the game progresses and you'll find yourself doing tasks that utilize the touch screen. Trust me. This is not as easy as it sounds as it requires you to really pay attention in direction of the sound but also some memorized patterns.

The puzzles really add a new dynamic to the story telling and it is with this fluid combination I see why this fame is rather addictve. My nephew LOVES this game and I'm eagered to see more developed in this nature.

My only gripe is that sometimes when I hit the home key I'm forced to start way back then where I left off. It needs better save management. Also, the artwork us nice buy it could be better :) all in all, thumbs up! Well worth the intoductuary price.

Needs a few fixes to get 5 stars

:
This game is awesome. The story, voice acting, and sound is excellent and the game is really something fun and unique. But if the devs want a 5-star rating, they absolutely NEED to implement a better save function. As it stands, the game only saves at the end of a chapter. Sorry, but life doesn't stop for your game. On three separate occasions, I've made it about 90% through a chapter, only to lose all of my progress due to an ill-timed call. This inconvenience was only made more frustrating by the fact that every time I tried to replay that chapter, the game kept crashing mid-chapter. Give us the chance to save our progress and a crash would be forgivable. But instead, I had to play chapter 2 LITERALLY no less than 8 times to finally make it to chapter 3. That's unnacceptable. A simple autosave (or at least savestate) option would remedy this. I will admit that the fact that I replayed chapter 2 seven times is testament to how fun this game is, but seriously, the save system used now is just archaic and lazy.

Other than that, this is an excellent, unique game. However, prospective buyers may want to hold off until the devs implement a better save system, lest you subject yourself to some horrible frustration.
